Our History
COS Founders

In the spring of 1957, Norwood Grace Church and Armstrong Chapel sent a team of people to survey residents in the Sycamore area to determine interest in establishing a Methodist church in Montgomery. With a positive response from 154 families, Jim Hipkins was charged with launching a new congregation that would become Church of the Saviour. On September 8, 1957, the first worship service of Church of the Saviour was held in the cafeteria of the Montgomery Elementary school with thirty-six children and thirty adults attending. As the first congregation grew, the church moved to the cafeteria at Sycamore High School located on Cooper Road at that time. For nearly four years, the congregation worshiped without a place of their own.

Then on August 2, 1961, there was the much anticipated ground breaking for the church building. By that time, the congregation had increased in number. Now there were seventy charter members. Through the years, additional facilities have been added, including the first parsonage in 1963 and the second in 1985. A second sanctuary was constructed in 1973, and an educational wing with a multipurpose room was added in 1982.

As the Montgomery area grew, and the Church continued to be an important religious and community resource, attendance grew steadily. With a significant emphasis on youth and family worship, the church realized its limited space for Sunday school and Adult Education. In 1996, the congregation approved another facilities expansion. Worship in the present sanctuary began in December of 1997 and included the addition of classroom space along the narthex.

In 2002, the vision of offering additional worship opportunities was realized with the addition of The Bridge, a contemporary worship service. In 2004, the leadership of the church took bold steps of faith for Church of the Saviour to become a multi-site church. With two years of discernment and planning, the Service Center @ Wards Corner opened in April of 2007. The campus offers progressive opportunities for service ministry and Saturday evening worship as well.

Today, Church of the Saviour continues its ministry by inviting searching people to joyful living in Jesus, offering growth through small groups to discover one's purpose, and opportunities to serve others through the power of God’s love. When future generations find Church of the Saviour as a place to worship and serve, Christ will continue to guide and befriend all who seek His Kingdom.
